The adventure kicked off in Nakuru at the leisurely hour of 10 am. Our plan? To take the road less traveled, quite literally! Eldoret was the destination, but we opted for the road less clogged, steering clear of the chaotic A104 highway. Who needs a parade of trucks and lorries when you can savor the scenic Nakuru-Kabarak-Eldama Ravine route? Sure, it might add a few miles to the journey, but for free-spirited wanderers like us, it was the jackpot—a chance to dive deeper into the wonders of Baringo county.
Our first stop was Kabarak, a brunch of champions to fuel our budget-traveler souls. No fancy eateries for us, just a cozy roadside joint where I indulged in 2 chapatis, an omelette, and tea while my buddy savored an omelette, 2 sausages, and coffee. A bill of about 400 KES and we were back on track, ready to conquer the road.
Amidst our scenic drive, we stumbled upon a river, supposedly marking the Nakuru-Baringo county divide according to Google Maps. Funny thing, neither of us recalls this river from past trips. Seasonal, perhaps? The El Niño season in Kenya did give this theory some weight.
After a picturesque pause, we continued and shortly after, we cruised into Eldama Ravine, a town we thought we knew like the back of our hands from our two previous visits and thus didn't plan on making a stop. About 15 minutes later, we stumbled upon Maji Mazuri—a shopping centre nestled beside a meandering river that seemed to almost craft an oxbow lake. This discovery was a delightful shock, leaving us scratching our heads, wondering how we missed this hidden gem during our past jaunts along this very route. A quick consultation with Google Maps revealed we took a wrong turn back in Eldama Ravine, and we were actually on the road to Makutano Junction on A104! But hey, getting lost is just part of the thrill, right?
A quick turnaround and we were on the right path toward Eldoret, through one of the most breathtaking routes in the northern rift region. Lush forests painted in their greenest shades, rivers flowing fuller than ever, and waterfalls stealing the show—some were practically roadside attractions! The Chemosusu Dam peeked into our view, adding to the allure of the journey.
And let's talk viewpoints! The Eldama Ravine-Eldoret Route treated us to jaw-dropping vistas of the Rift Valley’s grandeur. But the cherry on top? Chororget! Nestled off the Eldama Ravine-Eldoret Route, along the Nyaaru-Iten road, this gem, about 12 km from the Nyaaru Shopping Centre turn-off, boasted the best views in my opinion.
Lo and behold, as the day wound down, we found ourselves in Iten—a perfect, unplanned twist to wrap up our adventure!
